Wuaki.tv CEO promoted to executive officer at Rakuten

Jacinto Roca, CEO and founder of Barcelona-based video-on-demand (VOD) streaming service Wuaki.tv, has been promoted to executive officer of Rakuten to coordinate video operations worldwide.


rocawuakiRoca will ensure the strategy alignment and synergies of Wuaki.tv with San Francisco-based Viki, the global TV site powered by a volunteer fan community, and Showtime, a VOD streaming service operating in Japan.

Wuaki.tv was founded by Roca and his partners in Barcelona in 2009 and was then bought by Rakuten in 2012. Since the acquisition, Wuaki.tv has expanded into seven markets and will finish the year with operations in 12 European countries.

Last week the company announced it was about to launch a VOD marketplace for the European region, kicking off with a partnership with the Gulli kids' TV Network in France.
