Cisco plans to acquire 1 Mainstream, a privately held company that offers a cloud-based video platform for launching live and on-demand over-the-top (OTT) video services to a variety of devices.

1 Mainstream's technology complements Cisco's Infinite suite of cloud-powered video entertainment solutions designed to help service providers, broadcasters and media companies to deliver TV experiences to multiple screens, utilising one cloud. Customers can make their entire channel line-up and content library available to viewers via streaming devices.

1 Mainstream will join Cisco's Service Provider Video Software and Solutions Cloud Engineering Group, under the leadership of Conrad Clemson, senior vice president and general manager. The acquisition is expected to be complete in the second quarter of Cisco's current fiscal year.

"1 Mainstream's rapid growth shows the huge opportunity for technology that helps premium content owners reach audiences across multiple platforms and devices, quickly and efficiently," said Alun Webber, managing director for product design and development at Cisco customer Sky. "As a major customer, we are pleased to have been so closely involved in their development and we look forward to continue working with them as they become part of our long-standing partner Cisco's Service Provider Video Team."
