Virtual reality's (VR) future success just received a huge boost as online video giant YouTube has confirmed that it is now supporting it.

YouTube VRThe last few months have seen a renaissance in VR. In September 2015 the team behind Oculus VR technology, which offers immersive 3D experiences, revealed that a number of leading content companies and service providers have endorsed its offerings, including leaders in subscription video-on-demand (VOD) and over-the-top (OTT) such as Netflix and Hulu.

In this latest move YouTube is bringing two new VR features to YouTube's Android app. All that is needed is a current phone and a Google Cardboard viewer.

In addition, the Google subsidiary has announced that it is extending the universe of existing YouTube content so that users can now watch any video using the aforementioned Cardboard technology so that they can experience what is described as a 'virtual movie theatre'. YouTube claims that this delivers the largest VR content library to mobile users.
