Telemundo soap opera La Reina del Sur may never air in Venezuela, as the country's telecom authority Venezuela's Comisión Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Conatel) has formally requested DirecTV to cancel its premiere.

The soap opera, about the world of narcotics, is scheduled to air tomorrow (10 November) during prime time on the Pasiones channel - a soap-opera themed pay-TV network.

"Having analysed both format and content, Conatel has described the series as a narco-novela, and it has concluded its content promotes negative values and breaks the law for social responsibility of TV, radio and electronica media," stated Conatel in a public release.

In a letter signed by William Castillo, Conatel's director, to Alex Elorriaga, chief executive of DirecTV in Venezuela, the direct-to-home (DTH) operator was also asked to stop the promotion of the premiere and to adhere to the content selection outlined in current and future legislation.
