Telefónica's Home Gateway Unit's commercialisation in Spain is taking place two months later than expected, with its debut in Brazil and Chile's re-scheduled for next year.

hguThe fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) device is able to replace router, video-bridge and optical network termination (ONT) in a single box that manages pay-TV, broadband, phone, Internet of Things (IoT) and home security.

Announced in June, the equipment is the first commercial product developed by Telefónica's Centro Global de Desarrollo de Dispositivos. The unit was scheduled to launch in Spain in September, and in Brazil and Chile before the end of the year, but the commercial deployment has been slower than expected.

The device is being delivered to Telefónica's fibre clients, customers that upgrade from ADSL to fibre or portabilities from third-party fibre companies to Telefónica's services. It is currently only available in Madrid, Valencia, Murcia and Andalusia. The telco intends to have it deployed across the whole of Spain before March 2016.

The Home Gateway Unit includes six internal aerials for Wi-Fi integrated through Quantenna Communications - four for 5 GHz and two for 2.4GHz - an FXS port to integrate voice IP services, four Ethernet ports and a new GPN chip. It has been co-designed with Mormendi, with software and hardware production from Taiwan's Askey and Mitrastar
