It may be under fire at home, but the BBC, in particular its news offering, is firing on all cylinders according to the latest comScore digital rankings.
The analysis showed that the BBC's sites have achieved their highest-ranking position in ComScore's News and Information category, above competitors including CNN, Mail Online, NYT and The Guardian. The BBC now has a global desktop audience of 75.6 million unique visitors each month, overtaking arch-rival CNN which generated 72.1 million. BBC visitors were also found to be more engaged, spending over three minutes per visit and generating close to 1.8 billion page views.
The BBC puts its popularity down to a programme of product investment, digital innovation and what it boasts is its continued investment in balanced reporting from 'an unrivalled network' of international correspondents. The corporation also cited improved infrastructure and the rise of pay- TV in emerging markets such as Russia, Africa, the Middle East and India which has contributed to the growth in distribution, along with the launch of a number of new product innovations including pure HD, TV everywhere rights, over 120 hours of VOD assets per year and investment in both news journalism and long-form programming.
"In an increasingly noisy news landscape the BBC chooses to offer facts, context and completely impartial analysis people can trust," said Jim Egan, CEO of BBC Global News. "This has always been our commitment and we are delighted that audiences around the world value what we do."
