Nearly 70 analogue TV broadcasting stations across seven states in Mexico will be switched off on next month on the country's route to DTT implementation.

Having reached the goal of minimum 90% digital coverage, towns in Baja California, Jalisco, Michoacan, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Sonora will switch off their analogue TV signals on 16 December.

According to the Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT) at least 90% of families with low resources in the selected areas have received the necessary technology for DTT. Indeed, the SCT claims to have delivered over 6.5 million DTT-ready TVs and set-top boxes so far.

For the rest of the population, the government is confident that viewers will acquire the DTT equipment and technical services to keep watching TV. The authorities have opened a website and a phone line to answer any questions.

Both the telecom authority and the government are on schedule as they move towards the general analogue switch-off on 31 December.
