The SundanceNow Doc Club streaming video-on-demand (VOD) service is launching Take 5, a five-minute short film series.

Set to launch in early 2016, Take 5 will consist of capsule collections of five-minute documentaries, with each collection exploring a single timely topic, geared to starting public conversation and honouring diverse points of view.

Production is already well underway on the series’ first collection, which will include five films, each of which explores an aspect of justice in America, with topics tying into issues being debated as the country turns its attention to the 2016 presidential election.

For Take 5: Justice in America, Doc Club has commissioned work from various documentary makers, including: Nelson George; the team of Sheena Joyce & Don Argott; Razan Ghalayini; Rachel Lears; and Sheldon Candis.

The inaugural collection of films will explore: the working poor; gentrification; prison and bail reform; voting rights; and race and gun violence.

All the films will be available and shareable for free to both Doc Club members and the general public.

“The Take 5 short film series anchors Doc Club’s commitment to documentary filmmakers, and to storytelling that makes an impact,” said Marcus Lee, GM of SundanceNow Doc Club. “We love the power of short-form content and the potential for five-minute films to cut through the rhetoric and get to the heart of a big topic in a moving, incisive and provocative way.”

“Take 5 is a fantastic opportunity for filmmakers to tell stories on issues we’re passionate about,” added filmmaker Nelson George. “The five-minute format is accessible via digital and social media, which allows us to get in front of a broad audience and initiate discussions around these important issues.”
