Sweden, France, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Spain are the five European countries with the fastest fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks.
According to a report from Comparaiso, the largest telecom operators in Sweden and France offer broadband capacities of up to 1,000Mbps, and the average high speed connection reaches over 500Mbps.
Having previously been at the bottom of the list, Spain's networks now deliver the fifth highest speed, averaging 188Mbps, with Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange delivering 300Mbps through their premium fibre packages.
The report is not a real indicator of the quality of infrastructure, however, as it focuses on the performance of each country's best connections, but it's an indicator of competition and market development.
Following the report, Greece (with top Internet plans offering 50Mbps) and the UK (under 100Mbps) are the two Western European territories with poorest fibre infrastructure.
“It’s great news that Spain co-leads Internet connection rankings in Europe, as it hasn’t happened before. It's one of the country's main goals to deliver 30Mbps connections to over half of Spanish homes by 2020,” said Alicia Navas, country manager, Comparaiso. “Still a large portion of the country suffers from slow connections, and networks should improve in a more homogeneous way.”
