Online video giant Netflix is adapting the epic Indian film Gangs of Wasseypur from director Anurag Kashyap to stream worldwide as an eight-part series.

The two-part film made its premiere at Cannes in 2012, but this news “reflects how digital distribution can play a role in expanding a film's audience after its theatrical release,” said Kashyap at the Film Bazaar in Goa.

Netflix will stream the series in the first week of December, with English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Chinese subtitles.

Wasseypur, which concerns the coal industry in Bihar state, stars Manoj Bajpai, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi and Richa Chadha. It is co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures.

North American rights to the film are held by Cinelicious, which worked with digital rights aggregator Film Karavan and the film's producer Guneet Monga to secure the deal with Netflix.

The news comes ahead of the launch of Netflix’s VOD service in India next year.
