In a crushing blow for the long-term incumbent, upstart telco provider Altice has won exclusive French broadcasting rights for the English Premier League for 2016-2019.
The Patrick Drahi-owned provider has spent the last year or so aggressively establishing its presence in the US pay-TV arena. So much so, a recent report from Ampere Analysis suggests that Altice is set to join the largest global pay-TV players who control close to 50% of the world's subscription TV revenue.
In this latest move Altice has been awarded exclusive broadcasting rights in France and Monaco and non-exclusive rights in Andorra, Luxembourg and Switzerland for the three seasons from 2016/17 to 2018/19. The company is said to be paying about €100 million a season, which would be €35 million more than that paid by current owner Canal +.
Commenting on the deal, Nicolas Rotkoff, Altice entertainment and sports CEO, said: "We are extremely pleased and excited to have entered into this new and long-term partnership with the Premier League, the world's most admired football championship. This is another big step for Altice's investment strategy to provide the best in class TV content and broadband packages to its customers across the world."
"We are very pleased that Altice has chosen to invest in our broadcasting rights for seasons 2016/17 to 2018/19," added Premier League executive chairman, Richard Scudamore. "Altice has an established track record as a global telecommunications company and we look forward to working with them to deliver high-quality coverage of the Premier League to our many fans in France, and the other territories for which Altice has acquired our rights."
