CuriosityStream has chosen Limelight Networks’ technology platform for managing and streaming content.

CuriosityStream is an ad-free multiscreen subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service founded by John Hendricks, the founder of the Discovery Channel and former chairman of Discovery Communications. Its stated mission is to provide an affordable, ad-free destination where 'the world's best' factual television content may be enjoyed on-demand and on any device. It will aggregate documentaries about science, technology and civilisation, 'immune' from ad-driven ratings pressure that it says inevitably leads to lowest-common-denominator programming.

“We built a new OTT service from the ground up, so we turned to Limelight as a single solution to manage, secure and deliver our videos so we could focus our resources on building our streaming business,” said Peter North, chief digital officer, CuriosityStream.

“Our customers expect us to support a variety of devices, such as Roku and Apple TV, native smart TV applications, tablets and smartphones. Limelight enables us to deliver video in the ideal format to each of these competing but inherently different streaming platforms.”

The Limelight Orchestrate Video Platform is a suite of cloud-based video delivery and management software. Orchestrate provides a global footprint, scalability that can handle peak loads, and consistent delivery in broadcast quality regardless of device or geography, the company said.

“CuriosityStream viewers often watch its curated content on science, technology and significant historical events on multiple devices. There is a high probability that some viewers may even start watching on one device and finish on another,” said Kevin Odden, group vice president of sales, Limelight.

“Limelight consistently delivers the high quality experience they expect on any video capable device worldwide.”
