Aiming to avoid the damaging row that it had with DISH Network, Tegna has reached a multi-year carriage agreement with DIRECTV and AT&T U-verse.
Tegna comprises 46 television stations and claims to be the largest independent station group of major network affiliates in the top 25 markets, reaching approximately a third of all television households in the US.
The move comes in stark contrast to the saga of conflict that Tegna experienced with its retrans negotiation with Dish in September 2015. The leading satellite operator had gone into battle over fees with the former Gannet-owned pay-TV firm and as a result DISH saw its customers' access to 51 local channels in 39 markets blocked, leading to millions of screens blacked out. The issue was only resolved two weeks later.
