JPEG2000 software codec toolkit provider Comprimato has inked a deal with media production tools provider Vizrt.

The software encoder will now be made available to the estate of installed Viz Engines and will provide the capability to create JPEG2000 streams, including Ultra HD, without additional hardware or external devices.

The JPEG2000 standard compliant software codec leverages the power of AMD, Intel and NVidia GPUs and CPUs to speed up real-time Ultra HD video and image compression 4X in video processing devices.

The JPEG2000 codec has been adopted by a number of major broadcasters, which uses wavelet compression for efficiency and image quality. The core design of JPEG2000 allows Ultra HD resolution videos to be compressed without tiling, ensuring, said Vizrt, a ‘seamless and gentle’ approach to video processing.

“We designed the Viz Engine to be a flexible, customisable graphics and playout device at resolutions up to Ultra HD,” explained Christian Huber, executive VP IT & logistics at Vizrt. “We already provide a number of popular codecs for those who need to stream direct from the device. Adding JPEG2000, in co-operation with Comprimato, is a real advantage for many of our users.”

Jiri Matela, CEO of Comprimato added: “We are delighted to be working with Vizrt. Adding our compact software module to the Viz Engine means users can configure it for JPEG2000 streaming with no additional hardware: just the NVidia graphics card in the PC.”
