Telefónica preps major video launch across LATAM

Through various initiatives like video-on-demand (VOD) and linear pay-TV platforms, Telefónica plans to open video-focused operations in seven Latin American markets.



Ecuador, Uruguay, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua will see the launch of one of Telefónica's video platforms during 2016. although no specific details have been unveiled.

The telco currently manages IPTV, direct-to-home (DTH), VOD and over-the-top (OTT) operations in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela.

“We reassert our commitment with Latin America, as we intend to become the world's largest pay-TV operator in Spanish and Portuguese,” commented Luis Delamer, director of Telefónica's video unit in Latin America. “We are now leaders in HDTV, and in 2016 we are targeting double as many countries with our services.”

Through this announcement, Telefónica shows its clear intentions in Latin America, where it has already experienced great growth during recent years, especially in Brazil's Portuguese-speaking pay-TV market with the GVT buy-out.

“We are determined to drive pay-TV's development across the region and we are placing content at the centre of our commercial offer,” added Delamer.
