SAVuka TV is launching an Android app offering local mobile on-demand content to South Africans, in what is becoming a hotly contested market.

The distinguishing feature of this latest video-on-demand (VOD) service offers ‘short burst’ local entertainment, in the form of dramas, reality shows and documentaries, typically lasting for eight minutes, says the company.

“We're not focused on the binge viewer, but on the person who is on their way to school, work or town. The other differentiating factor is that our platform encourages mass ownership, with the hope that where there is ownership, then responsibility for success is also shared,” said Siphamandla Kunene, creative producer, SAVuka TV.

The VOD app, created by Pecil Productions, launches with the reality shows Soap Stars, Straight back, Out and Living It, Salon Nightmares, Diski Hits and Mrs, and Behind the Pulpit.

Subscriptions cost ZAR9.99 per day, ZAR19.99 for five days and ZAR35 per month. Pay-per-view options are also offered for between ZAR1.50 and ZAR5.50.
