Brazil's Grupo Globo will own live broadcasting rights of the Olympics until 2032, following an agreement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The rights are exclusive for pay-TV, any Internet-based platform such as streaming or over-the-top (OTT) services and mobile broadcasting. Grupo Globo won't have exclusivity over free-to-air (FTA) rights.
“This long-term agreement with our partner Globo shows we trust Brazil's largest media group,” said Thomas Bach, president of the IOC. “In addition to broadcast the Olympics until 2032, Grupo Globo commits to promote sports and Olympic values all year round.”
The rights deal includes next year's Rio Olympics, the Pyeongchang Winter Games in 2018, the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, plus future games yet to be awarded.
“We are proud of being selected to broadcast the Olympics, the world's largest sports event. Our partnership with the IOC has been long-standing and the new, extended agreement shows we believe in the Olympic movement,” added Roberto Iriney Marinho, president, Grupo Globo.
