Ericsson is in discussions with mobile operators in Kenya to launch its recently unveiled subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service NuVu.

The service, which is about to roll out in Nigeria in collaboration with Airtel, is also expected to launch in Kenya in 2016.

NuVu’s SVOD service will provide over 3,000 international and local shows and videos for US$5 per month in an all inclusive package or $2 per week for selected content.

“Content downloaded via NuVu will be secure as the platform offers digital rights management. This protects content from piracy, an important consideration especially for content producers,” said Robert Rudin, country manager, Ericsson Kenya.

The move follows a new TV and media report from Consumerlab which reveals smartphones and tablets have become the second most popular form of entertainment among Kenyans, after television.

“Overall, 46% (of respondents) are interested in mobile video-on-demand with young, white-collar professionals showing the strongest interest at 53%. The key barrier to their adoption is lack of speed and reliability of the Internet connection,” said Consumberlab.
