Although it’s some of the most coveted content, football netted just over 2% of Spain's total audience during the 2014-2015 season.
A report published by Spanish start-up Viewmetric reveals sports broadcasts represented 4% of total viewers, and 53.2% of these watched football-related programming.
La Liga was the most followed sporting competition in Spain, gathering 145 million viewers through 380 live games aired on pay-TV and free-to-air (FTA) platforms. La Liga represents 16% of the entire Spanish sports TV audience and 30% of football viewers.
The Champions League is the second most watched competition, with 121 million total viewers during the 2014-2015 season, followed by La Liga's second division with 72 million viewers and the Copa del Rey with 34 million viewers.
Among other sports broadcasts, Formula One gathered the highest number of viewers after football, with 80 million.
“Figures show football is the most followed sport in Spain, far above the rest, and motor racing and basketball are in second and third place,” explained Santos Montiel, CEO, Viewmetric.
