Indian fans of the BBC cult series Sherlock will be able to watch the latest 90-minute special The Abominable Bride on AXN on 9 January 2016.

The special, which once again stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, is set in London in 1895.

“The fans here have waited two long years to see the new episode of this cult show, and we are very excited to be premiering it. In Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, viewers will witness a very different, Victorian version of the contemporary Sherlock. Tuning in to this two-hour special episode will definitely enthral the viewers as they are taken into a different era of mystery and crime-solving. We expect to delight our viewers with this offering because they know, if it’s Sherlock, it has to be on AXN,” said Saurabh Yagnik, executive vice president and business head, Sony PIX & AXN India.

“Sherlock has become a global phenomenon that we at BBC worldwide are extremely proud of,” added Myleeta Aga, SVP & GM, BBC Worldwide India.

The news comes as Sherlock: The Abominable Bride debuted at No 3 at the South Korean box office, with a 16.4% share of box office revenue (or US$4.4 million) in the first weekend of 2016 - ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Sherlock: The Abominable Bride is also getting a theatrical release in China and some other international markets.

The special, like the three Sherlock series before it, was written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. A fourth series begins production later this year.
