Not to be outdone at CES by arch-rivals LG Electronics and Samsung, Sony has unveiled a line of Ultra HD featuring high dynamic range (HDR) technology, and has announced that it will support the sets with 4K content.
Sony says that its new BRAVIA TVs will take 4KTV viewing to the next level in 2016, with higher brightness, higher contrast and vibrant colours, resulting in more depth and detail than ever before thanks to its unique technologies. It says that it will also bring signature style and exciting new connected entertainment experiences into every living room with Android TV. Viewers will be able to see smartphone content on the TV screen with Google Cast. By touching a ‘Cast’ icon, viewers will be able to send films, TV shows and YouTube content from an Android/iOS device to view on BRAVIA. However, Google Cast is supported by some applications which are not yet available for Android TV.
HDR support is included in many of the new 4K BRAVIA TVs, and Sony is confident that they will be ready to take advantage of the new wave of HDR-enabled content coming from online video services like Amazon Video and Netflix, film-makers and broadcasters.
The range also sees in some sets the introduction of the new and unique Slim Backlight Drive. This comprises a new grid-array backlighting system that was previously only achievable with full-array LED backlight systems.
Combining it with X-tended Dynamic Range PRO, says Sony, will boost and dim the backlight to create brighter peak highlights and deeper blacks with up to three times the brightness range of conventional TVs. It adds that the technology manages the light source more accurately in each specific zone while still maintaining a slim profile. Also unique to Sony and enhancing the HDR picture is Triluminos Display which reproduces a wider colour range with accurate colour details at any brightness level.
