Phantom Sun Post Production has burst into life with pop-up post-production services on its first major project for the ITV series Bear Grylls Survival School.
Phantom Sun Post Production was founded by Eben Clancy, previously the head of post-production at Timeline North, and Chris Groom, former head of production for Timeline at its BT Sport operation. The two offer experience across genres including factual, drama, sport, entertainment, children’s, documentaries, education and promotion, with post-production knowledge in HD, non-linear and tapeless workflows.
The pair believe that there is a niche in the ever-evolving post industry where budgets are being squeezed to the point that they can no longer afford high central London rents. The company has been developing a production management system with QuadLogic Systems in Bristol, combined with workflows using NAS and cloud storage. With such capability, Phantom Sun claims that it can cut the cuts of post production by as much as a third.
“We came up with this concept in 2009, but the technology had not come of age yet. Now, with advanced cloud technology and the acceptance of remote working, production companies can cut costs by doing many elements of the editing process at a location that suits them,” said Clancy. “Central post production facilities are still needed, but many of the final stages of grading and editing can largely be done remotely using our pop-up post production technology on a temporary basis. The Bear Grylls project was the perfect project to illustrate how this can be done.”
Phantom Sun’s project for the Bear Grylls 12x30’ adventure series, will air on 10 January on CITV and ITV. The work uses remote editing and pop-up editing technology to help production companies cut the cost of editing and harness the power of the cloud through remote working.
