Not until the Olympics are over in Rio, will Brazil start to switch off analogue TV in its largest cities, starting with the capital, Brasilia, in October.

According to TelaViva, the Minister of Communications, André Figueirido said on national radio that DTT deployment in Brazil will be delayed from the scheduled April deadline until October. After that, various switch-offs will be scheduled to meet the general DTT switchover deadline in 2018.

The first test, to be carried out in Rio Verde on 15 February, won't be rescheduled however. “The project pilot is ready and we have ensured that 93% homes are ready to start getting digital TV,” said Figueirido.

After Mexico completed its DTT switchover on 31 December, becoming the first Latin American country to do so, and Uruguay, Bolivia and the Dominican Republic, which will switch this year, Brazil is expected to be the fifth territory in the region to have digital-only TV.
