Less than a month after coming into existence, the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) has made significant additions to its roster of broadcast and TV firms.

The alliance believes that as broadcasters and other media companies look to use IP-based workflows to speed and streamline the movement and management of increasingly complex content and adapt their businesses to better compete with other content options such as over-the-top (OTT), open standards are the key to protecting current investments and ensuring long-term interoperability.

Initially, AIMS will prioritise three key strategies: initiatives that facilitate the education and adoption of open standards; facilitation of activities that accelerate the development of solutions that support these open standards; and nurturing the creation of new standards by supporting standards bodies with participation and testing in real-world environments.

In this latest development, AIMS has signed up Arista Networks, Cisco Systems, EVS Broadcast Equipment and The Telos Alliance. These firms will join the likes of founding member companies, Grass Valley, Imagine Communications, Lawo, Nevion and Snell Advanced Media.

"The AIMS alliance and Arista Networks share a common vision on driving open standards and API's to enable a migration of the broadcast world to IP infrastructure which promises to enable new media workstreams and deliver cloud economics to the broadcast industry," remarked Ed Chapman, VP of business development and alliances, Arista Networks.

Added Cisco CTO of engineering and chief architect, Dave Ward: “[We] joined AIMS to catalyse the media industry transition to IP and cloud. We strongly support that the industry and developer community be based on open standards, open source and open APIs/platforms to make this transition. The creation of reference recommendations and solutions to move the community from SDI to IP is a key step forward to avoid the hurdles of the past.”
