Millicom's Tigo brand in Paraguay is to launch a 4G commercial offer, aiming to boost its digital lifestyle strategy, including several over-the-top (OTT) services.
Already during January, Tigo's customers are to get 4G SIM cards for free, in anticipation of the roll-out of LTE services, scheduled for March.
The move takes place shortly after Paraguay's telecom council, CONATEL, approved Tigo Paraguay's application for a 4G licence in the 1,700-2,100 MHz band in December 2015. Paraguay's leading mobile network operator paid $45 million for three sub-band blocks.
4G technology is an absolute must-have for Paraguay. Consumer growth and demand, with the constant advances in technology, make it necessary, and we are delighted to have reached this important milestone, so that we can bring 4G to our customers, said Jose Perdomo, CEO, Tigo Paraguay. It is also part of our Digital Lifestyle drive across Latin America, so we can deliver great connectivity for our customers and pave the way for even greater innovations to follow.
Targeting transition from the voice to the mobile data business, Tigo is offering bundled over-the-top (OTT) smart apps for mobile screens, including streaming video, across Latin America since 2014.
With nearly four million accesses, Tigo is the leading mobile operator in Paraguay, covering 96% of the territory.
