Taking advantage of the Gigabit Internet service technology that it has recently set up, Canadian telco Urban Communications has launched a private beta of an IPTV service to select residences.

A provider of Internet, voice, video and broadband application products over its 200km carrier grade fibre optic network in metro Vancouver and Victoria, Urban will run its beta test throughout the first quarter of 2016 with full availability of the IPTV package to customers of its Urbanfibre ultra-high speed fibre internet service in the second quarter of the year.

Urbanfibre subscribers have access to 251 channels of high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) TV content. The basic package includes 90 channels of which 35 are HD, as well as the ability to watch live TV on most Android second screen devices.

"We are excited to be introducing our customers to a new, better television experience," said Urban vice president of product marketing, Jon Paul Janze.

"Video is the single largest consumer of bandwidth today, accounting for more than 70% of Internet traffic. It regularly pushes people over their data limits and can skip and lag over the average Internet connection. Our Gigabit speed Internet service with unlimited data transfer is the best platform to deliver an unparalleled streaming video and IPTV viewing experience."
