STARZ preps The Girlfriend Experience TV show

US content giant STARZ is prepping The Girlfriend Experience, a reimagining of Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 critically acclaimed movie of the same name.



The show will premiere on STARZ, and the entire series will be available on STARZ PLAY and STARZ ON DEMAND, for bingeing.

“We believe the provocative world created by Steven ... coupled with an absolutely mesmerising performance by Riley Keough in the lead role will make The Girlfriend Experience difficult to turn off,” said STARZ CEO Chris Albrecht. “Providing binging access to the entire 13-episodes to STARZ subscribers, along with the traditional weekly episodic premiere schedule, allows us to accommodate all viewing appetites.”

The Girlfriend Experience follows Christine Reade, a second-year student at Chicago-Burnham Law School and a new intern at the prestigious firm of Kirkland & Allen. Working hard to establish herself at the firm, her focus quickly shifts when a classmate introduces her to the world of transactional relationships. Known as GFEs, they are women who provide “the girlfriend experience” — emotional and sexual relationships at a very high price. Juggling two very different lives, Christine quickly finds herself drawn into the GFE world, attracted to the rush of control and intimacy.

This is not the only original series that the premium network is working on. It recently announced that it has partnered with Televisa USA to develop the original series Maleficio based on the popular Mexican production. El Maleficio originally aired in 1983-84 with 320 episodes, to become one of the most successful telenovelas of all time.
