Intertrust Technologies has added Apple's FairPlay Streaming and Google's Widevine Modular technologies to its ExpressPlay cloud digital rights management (DRM) system.
By supporting the technologies in addition to Microsoft's PlayReady and open standards-based Marlin DRM, ExpressPlay has become a multi-format DRM cloud service for the distribution of premium video, audio and eBook content over the Internet.
ExpressPlay with multi-DRM support removes format decisions from the content distribution equation and allows adopters to use a single solution to distribute content to most major mobile and consumer electronics devices, whether they use Marlin, Microsoft's PlayReady, Apple's FairPlay Streaming (FPS), or Google's Widevine Modular DRM, along with all major Web browsers, Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Microsoft's Edge and IE. It also supports the use of native hardware security on devices to deliver premium (HD or UHD) content.
"The extension of ExpressPlay to support all major DRM formats is critical to growth in digital content distribution," said Matthew Glotzer, head of media at Intertrust. "Our goal is to allow service providers and content owners to focus on licensing terms, knowing that the business models are protected by a single solution, irrespective of their target platform. ExpressPlay represents a gold standard for content security, and adopters benefit from frictionless integration and deployment."
