As part of a series of moves in the mobile space, Ericsson is uniting with global service providers to establish a content delivery ecosystem, and has been selected as a preferred partner for the Fox Innovation Lab.
The new Unified Delivery Network aims to allow consumers to benefit from enhanced video quality of experience through ‘seamless’ delivery. The ecosystem has been set up in conjunction with Hutchison, Vodafone, Telstra and AIS, and connects content providers with the last mile reach of service providers for content delivery. It has been supported initially by content providers such as Brightcove, DailyMotion, EchoStar, Deluxe, LeTV, QuickPlay offering them transparent connectivity and ability to scale performance.
Ericsson sees the growing need to alleviate growing strain on networks strain as over-the-top (OTT) and video becomes an ever-more dominating force in network traffic. Through addressing the needs of both service providers and content providers, Ericsson believes that the ‘revolutionary and transparent’ global content distribution network (G-CDN) ecosystem enables and aggregates network capabilities into the public domain, allowing services to be optimised and scaling the delivery of video content.
With the last mile edge delivery, content providers will be equipped to optimize services and scale the delivery of high quality content and advanced services including 4KTV, Ultra HD, gaming and virtual reality.
With a content peering partnership, Ericsson is confident that the collective members of the Unified Delivery Network have a full global reach for content delivery and value-add services to keep pace with the number of growing viewers, gamers and data surge with the rise of broadband connectivity and mobility. It will also be able to offer insights into drivers of revenue such as campaign performance and user engagement from operators. This could extend to being able to generate hyper-targeted content offerings and advertising, leading to personalised viewing experiences and so greater business opportunities.
"The launch of UDN delivers a disruptive new business model that offers a win-win situation for all players involved with traffic delivery,” commented Per Borgklint, senior vice president and head of business unit support solutions at Ericsson. “Service providers are given revenue-generating possibilities as they invest in building out their networks and content providers can take advantage of a much more transparent delivery environment. This transparency delivers data driven insights back to content originators meaning consumer experiences can be enhanced and personalised at a much deeper level.”
In another content led announcement, Ericsson will be a global partner in 20th Century Fox's Innovation Lab, an initiative dedicated to raising and accelerating the bar for next-generation content and devices. The company will engage with the lab on what both parties call innovations designed to help the media industry meet head-on the demands of today's exacting audiences.
The Fox Innovation Lab brings together 20th Century Fox and technology companies to work towards enhancing the viewing experience of content on all the consumer's devices, including a look forward at the potential of the connected car and home. Part of the Fox Innovation Lab's mission is to solve the challenges of delivering connected content to today's consumers, ensuring they are provided with the best possible end experiences. The Fox Innovation Lab will also develop solutions to allow consumers more opportunities to purchase and view video across multiple platforms.
