Indian direct-to-home (DTH) TV operator Tata Sky has partnered with Shemaroo Entertainment to launch a 24-hour comedy service.

Initially available as a standalone subscription TV option, the Hindi comedy service will move to digital platforms in the future, said the DTH company.

The popular comic strip Suppandi will be updated daily on Tata Sky Comedy, which is powered by Comedywalas. Content containing stand-up comedians Sugandha Mishra and Sahil Khattar will be available, along with the formats Scene Smaash, Pehchaan Kaun, Dekh Gaana Dekh, Filmy Fankaar, and Pocket Films with Gauri.

“Comedy is a genre that the audiences have a huge appetite for, and we believe there is currently a gap for a singular destination for all types of Hindi comedy content. We wish to fill that gap with this latest offering from Tata Sky. In partnership with Shemaroo, it is our attempt to provide a one-stop shop for popular comedy formats that will be available to subscribers 24 hours a day,” said Pallavi Puri, chief commercial officer, Tata Sky.

The satellite pay-TV operator’s latest service will cost INR59, although Tata Sky subscribers can receive it for free for the first ten days.

Classic series such as Zabaan Sambhalke, Office Office, Ye Jo Hai Zindagi and Nukkad will be joined by comedy shorts including Waiting Lounge, Fact de India, Paanch Namune, Sher Bazaar and No News Network.

Shemaroo Entertainment director Hiren Gada added: “Being a leading content aggregator and owner, our continuous efforts are to serve our audiences in new and innovative ways. Comedywalas is one such initiative from Shemaroo. Given the fact that comedy is such a universal entertainment genre, our efforts will be to aggregate, produce and curate some highly entertaining and fun programming.”
