Brazil's Embratel Star One has started supporting pay-TV broadcasting via satellite for Claro in Central America using the recently launched Star One C4.
star one c4América Móvil's direct-to-home (DTH) platform will use the capacity of its own satellite subsidiary across Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. It has also planned to use satellite broadcasting in Colombia to complement its cable TV offer.
The satellite, which was launched last summer, is the fifth of a third generation, and offers DTH capacity on Ku band across South and Central America. Indeed, it has already been used by Claro in Brazil to power HDTV distribution.
According to its latest report, Claro is the second largest player in Central America, totalling over 770,000 subscribers and beaten only by Millicom's Tigo, which owns one in four subs in the region.
DTH technology has proven essential for pay-TV growth in Central America, and has been cited as drawing over two million subs through to 2018.
