With Peru's becoming Telefónica's most important operation outside Spain, the telco is reinforcing its infrastructure commitments with the country's government.

According to the Spanish telco, almost 1.9 million more Peruvians now have access to mobile and fixed high speed broadband thanks to the on-going their collaboration agreement with the government, inked in 2013.

“By expanding mobile and Internet coverage in rural Peru we have brought telecoms services to over 2,200 towns, which now benefit from new communication opportunities. Besides, we have installed 9,664 Internet access points for State-owned organisations,” said Carlos Flores Ganoza, mobile and rural manager, Telefónica Perú.

Under a public plan with over $1.6 billion in investment, of which Telefónica is the main partner, the government intends to connect the remote inland, enabling access to communications and Internet-based services like over-the-top (OTT) platforms.

While being part of this programme, the Spanish telco is also taking the opportunity to become the country's strongest player, making Peru its brightest spot in Latin America. Regarding pay-TV, Telefónica owns over six in ten subscribers.
