The Organización de Telecomunicaciones Iberoamericanas (OTI), comprising 30 of the top Spanish-language content and telecoms companies, is to redefine its goals to promote local content development and increase connectivity in Latin America.

otiThe OTI aims to encourage regulatory authorities to adopt best practices, defend freedom of speech, improve access and connectivity in the region and encourage the development of compelling new content for distribution across various platforms.

The lack of local and relevant content has been previously flagged up by the GSMA as the main barrier to mobile broadband penetration in Latin America.

“Communication is undergoing an impressive and constant evolution. OTI's transformation is driven by the need to respond to a world that is constantly changing due to technological convergence,” said Emilio Azcárraga Jean, president of OTI, during his presentation.

The organisation represents Latin American, including Brazil, Spanish and US Hispanic media groups such as America TV, Canal 13, Canal Uno TV, Caracol, Grupo Bandeirantes, Grupo Clarín, Grupo PRISA, Televisa, RCN, Telemundo, TV Azteca, TVN, Univision and Venevisión.
