Just as Televisa shows interest in buying Megacable, the Guadalajara cable operator has reported a record 19% growth in pay-TV subscriptions in Q1 2016.

megacable tvAs of March 2016, Megacable reported 2.97 million subs, that is 133,000 subscriptions ( 5%) more than by December 2015. The figures represent a 19% increase since March 2015, closing a 12-month period in which the cable operator added nearly 480,000 households.

With these digits, Megacable consolidates as Mexico’s third largest pay-TV player in a market clearly led by Grupo Televisa, which has over 60% of share.

Megacable offers convergent services, broadband and phone, but its video segment is garnering most of revenue for the company.

During Q1 2016, Megacable invoiced $234 million in local currency, of which over $90 million came through residential video operations.

After two years of being banned from any kind of merger or acquisition, Grupo Televisa is back on the market again. Although no official interest has been reported, Mexico’s largest TV group may be looking to present a formal acquisition offer for Megacable during 2016. If allowed, Televisa would own over seven in ten pay-TV subscriptions in Mexico.
