A+E Networks is increasing its share in The History Channel Japan (THCJ) to 80% from its existing 50%, following a restructure in its joint venture with Super Network/Tohokushisha (TFC).
AEA+E’s latest investment will fund a host of new digital rights to back TFC’s over-the-top (OTT) ventures in Japan. Collaboration on content offerings for Japanese consumers and partnership on future productions also form part of the deal.
“A+E Networks is enormously proud of our 15-year partnership with TFC in Japan and this transaction aligns our interests for the next phase of growth together. The addition of digital rights significantly enhances the partnership to better serve our distribution and ad sales partners in Japan,” said Sean Cohan, president, international and digital media, A+E Networks.
The History Channel Japan increased its reach among male audiences by more than 10% in 2015 on the back of international shows such as Pawn Stars, American Restoration and local programming such as Zeppan Bike, and Tokoro-San's Snake Motors, the companies said in a statement.
