Conditional access and cloud-based applications developer China Digital TV has teamed up with Hubei Radio & Television Information Network for virtual reality (VR) services for TV subscribers.

Research and development of VR technologies and an integrated VR platform will be the responsibility of China Digital TV, while state-owned Hubei Radio & Television will plan, construct and operate the VR platform in the Chinese province.

China Digital TV will provide technical services related to the research and development of VR technologies and the establishment of the integrated VR platform.

“As an entirely new display technology, VR has the potential to disrupt many industries and revolutionise the way people consume content, play video games, compute, learn and interact,” China Digital TV said in a statement.

The company already provides broadcasting platform services to Chinese cable operators, enabling mobile gaming apps and other entertainment options to household television sets, and extending cable programming to any mobile device.
