Naspers’ ShowMax expands across Africa

South African subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service ShowMax has launched in 36 other African countries, undercutting rival Netflix by $2 a month.
ShowMax logoShowMax chief product officer Barron Ernst told Forbes there would be an emphasis on regional localisation, to differentiate the service from VOD competitors.
The two stream service will cost $7.99 a month, and offer about 15,000 TV shows and movies to subscribers in Botswana, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Reunion, Rwanda, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
ShowMax, owned by media conglomerate Naspers, already offers KykNET International in 28 other countries including Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada and some in Europe. In total, the SVOD service is now available in 65 countries.
