As it bids to press forward with its leadership in the 4KTV sector in the country, Korean satellite pay-TV provider KT SkyLife has launched its fifth Ultra HD (UHD) channel.
KT Skylife 27 May 2016“KT SkyLife is committed to providing the nation's first multi-channel high-definition TV and 3D broadcasting services, and continuing its leadership with optimised commercial UHDTV services,” commented the company’s CTO Han Lee. “As with our legacy standard and HD services, our UHDTV services will leverage best of breed technologies to bring our customers next generation immersive TV experiences.”
To enable the services, and to gain an edge on competitors, KT SkyLife is using the Ericsson AVP 4000 System encoders and MX8400 multiplexers. Ericsson encoders support video compression and pre-processing improvements in MPEG-2, AVC and high efficiency video coding (HEVC) encoders, with capabilities for video quality optimisation. Ericsson claims that its solution will ensure better video quality for KT SkyLife's customers, with expected picture quality improvements of up to 15-20%, while utilising less of the operator’s bandwidth.
“Consumers are placing more and more value on high quality TV experiences, and delivering seamless UHD TV is therefore a key challenge and opportunity for all service providers,” explained Giles Wilson, Ericsson CTO TV and media. “HEVC is fundamental to ensuring these new video formats can be deployed on a large scale cost-effectively, and we're very pleased to help KT SkyLife maximise the potential of this standard [and] meet the demands of its customers and succeed in today's challenging TV environment.”
