Sony PlayStation 4 passes 40MN units sold

The video-friendly Sony PlayStation 4 has cumulatively sold more than 40 million units to consumers worldwide as of the end of May.



ps4The company said that the sales numbers mean the PS4 is the fastest-selling console in its history. PS4 software sales also remain strong, with more than 270.9 million copies sold in retail stores globally and through digital downloads on PlayStation Store.

According to Limelight’s recent State of Online Video report, the PS4 is in the thick of the adoption of multi-function over-the-top (OTT) devices with a 23% market share, No 2 behind the Xbox.

“We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time,” said Andrew House, president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The company also plans to debut its virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, sometime this fiscal year, and House said that Sony will continue to expand the world of PS4 to deliver additional enhanced entertainment experiences.
