Following a Latin American agreement between Millicom and Netflix, the telco is to deliver a three-month free subscription to the service in Costa Rica, Paraguay and Guatemala.

tigo netflixAccording to Millicom, selected residential customers of the Tigo brand, namely some Tigo Star and Tigo Smart subscribers, will receive Netflix free for three months.

So far, the promotion has been released in Paraguay, which has recently become Millicom’s spearhead market, Costa Rica, it largest operation in Central America, and Guatemala.

The commercial move is expected to take place in other Latin American markets too, as the Millicom-Netflix agreement also covers Colombia, Bolivia, Honduras and El Salvador.

“Millicom’s mission to lead the digital lifestyle and focus on innovative products and services can open up new markets for subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) in a region where customers come largely unbanked and mostly as prepaid,” explained the telco in a release.

Indeed, Tigo has been using video and over-the-top (OTT) services as a cornerstone for its expansive strategy across the LATAM telecom sector.

“Millicom sees entertainment as essential content for driving subscriber numbers to our cable and wireless brands Tigo Star and Tigo Smart,” added the company. The same reasons were presented when the Swedish company started deploying its own OTT platform, Tigo Play.

The deal with Netflix, announced last week, will also see the SVOD leader’s mobile app preloaded in many Android devices distributed by Tigo.
