Following rapid growth in Argentina, free VOD over-the-top (OTT) platform Odeón is set to expand throughout Latin America.
The country’s public telco Arsat and the Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales*(INCAA) are negotiating rights with production and distribution companies, to ensure the films included in Odeón’s catalogue are available in other territories.
The state-owned VOD platform, launched a year ago, is also looking to strengthen its multi-screen presence by launching smart TVs and Chromecast platforms, shortly after having premiered an app for Android mobile devices.
“Figures are showing the great acceptance of the platform among Argentinians. It has over 420,000 registered users and it's adding about 15,000 new each month,” said Arsat president Rodrigo de Loredo. “Odeón is continuously increasing its audiovisual catalogue, from the 700 hours available at the beginning to the 1,300 currently available. And we intend to reach 1,500 hours of VOD soon.”
According to de Loredo, Odeón may also launch a transactional VOD feature targeting simultaneous VOD releases with movie premieres in cinemas. This pay-per-view service would be tested during the first months of the year and launched commercially by April.
