After a month of uncertainty, Argentina’s football organisation is close to making a TV rights deal with the Fox-Turner joint venture.

As reported by Argentinean newspaper La Nación, both companies have presented an offer of over $180 million per season plus a $35 variable bonus, which would near the amount initially put forward by the country’s football clubs.

The offer, which is more than $50 million over the initial bid, will be presented to AFA members by Marcelo Tinelli, ***the AFA representative who has led the negotiations, by next week.

If they agree to accept the offer, the terms of the agreement will then be negotiated between all the parties, including the Government. According to the newspaper, it is unlikely that the deal will be finalised before the second half of the year.

There are still 15 weeks left until the 2016-2017 season ends, an in order to avoid the remaining games being unaired, free-to-air (FTA) networks will continue to broadcast them until the eventual agreement with pay-TV operators becomes effective.

The negotiation has been going on for the last six months, after the Government decided to cancel the Fútbol Para Todos contract through which football clubs were subsidised to sell the rights cheaper to FTA networks.
