Argentina’s Government is continuing to open the national satellite market to foreign companies, now enabling Spain’s Hispasat to expand its TV distribution services.

Through a resolution published by Argentina’s Government gazette, the Ministry of Communications has green lit Hispasat to provide satellite services through the Hispasat 1D satellite (recently renamed to Hispasat 30W-4), equipped with Ku band transmitters, which are used to distribute TV and radio signals.

The permission for the Spanish operator, which was already delivering satellite services through the Hispasat 1C (renamed to Hispasat 84W-1), increases competition in a national scenario dominated by public telco Arsat.

According to the Ministry, the decision follows the Argentina-Spain agreement to improve satellite connectivity, signed in October 2001.

With the 1C, Hispasat was offering services to Argentinean media companies such as Cadena 3, Teleocho Cordoba and Radio Patagonia.

The Ministry of Communications’ decision arrives a few months after permission was given to Eutelsat to provide direct-to-home (DTH) connectivity through the 117 West A satellite.
