Mediapro has sent top executive Taxto Benet to Argentina to highlight how it has improved La Liga’s broadcasts in an attempt to support its bid to manage the country’s football TV rights in future seasons.
Last week, Benet, Mediapro partner and right hand to founder Jaume Roures, travelled to Buenos Aires with former football player Jorge Valdano to stress the importance of a deal for the Spanish company and demonstrate how La Liga will benefit from choosing Mediapro.
“We were interested in showing first-hand who we are and what we do. We are Spain’s largest content producer and one of the largest worldwide,” said Benet during an unplanned press conference held for the Argentinean media.
“It’s what we do [improving TV production for sports competitions]. It’s what we have done with Spain’s La Liga. We have improved the quality of match broadcasts that made La Liga the second most watched competition worldwide after the Premier League,” added the executive.
Although there have been critics of La Liga and Mediapro’s strategy in recent years, Mediapro has transformed the football competition into a TV-focused show by using new broadcasting technologies and unifying the competition’s image across all stadiums.
A final decision regarding the TV rights is expected this week, as the country’s football federation, the AFA, has already delayed resolution of the bidding process for two weeks, causing the entire football industry to come to a standstill.
