Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland has awarded FremantleMedia International (FMI) the distribution rights to its library of finished programming, as well as rights future MG RTL D commissions and show formats to non-German language territories.
Under the terms of the deal, FMI will become the exclusive distributor in the designated territories for original programming dating back to 2000, including several hundred hours of content from Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland channels, including all seasons of the network’s long-running hit Alarm für Cobra 11 – Die Autobahnpolizei. With 21 seasons and over 300 episodes already aired, the drama is delivering record ratings to RTL Television and the network has already committed to future series. Also included in the deal is Der Lehrer which tells the story of a German science and PE teacher who uses unconventional methods to motivate and educate the most problematic students in the school. The German TV award-winning drama has also secured further season commissions for the network after delivering great ratings over its last four seasons.
FMI will be launching new seasons of Cobra and Der Lehrer at MIPTV in April along with the rest of the Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland* catalogue. It also hopes to take advantage of Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland’s decision to invest heavily in its original content development recently, significantly increasing the number of hours in production, and will take these future titles out to international buyers as a result of the deal. FremantleMedia will look to exploit a number of show format rights through its global network of production offices.
“Today’s announcement further strengthens the relationship between FMI and Germany’s number one broadcaster, Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland,” commented Jens Richter, CEO of FremantleMedia International. “Its recent commitment to, and investment in, scripted content has produced some great shows that we look forward to taking out to the market.”
