Virgin makes progress in TV transition

As it reports its first quarter 2017 results, UK and Ireland cableco Virgin Media has revealed the extent to which is it transitioning customers away from basic TV services to advanced offerings.
In December 2016, the company announced a return to advanced TV services with the launch of a new advanced set-top box (STB) — the 4K-enabled Virgin TV V6 — plus a revamped TV anywhere app, a new TV tablet and the introduction of a media store.
The quarterly results showed that as of 31 March 2017, Virgin delivering 14.2 million broadband, video and fixed-line telephony services to 5.8 million cable customers in the UK and Ireland. The company posted a total revenue of £1.214 billion, up 1.2% on the same period of 2016. The company had 4.073 million TV service subscribers, up just half a percent year-on-year but with a direction of travel clearly towards the enhanced TV offer which now has 4.044 million users. Indeed, during the quarter Virgin added 40,600 enhanced TV customers while the basic offer saw a fall of 1,300.
