La Liga adds YouTube content ID to fight piracy

As Real Madrid are proclaimed champions of the 2016/2017 season, La Liga has announced the implementation of YouTube’s content ID to fight online video piracy.

The Google tool enables La Liga to identify its content across the platform and facilitates erasing pirate content. According to the La Liga, it will be able to report over 600,000 videos per season containing illegal content.

Through the YouTube content ID, La Liga will keep a database of authorised content, and the platform will automatically eliminate those videos that breach copyright.

During this season, La Liga has reported 142,000 pirate videos through social media, 2,400 user profiles showing pirate content, over 9,000 DNS servers that allowed pay-TV card-sharing and nearly 500 URLs which linked to pirate streaming content.

According to La Liga, the strategy is working and will be strengthened with the YouTube tool. “Rates of viewers watching pirate football has decreased from 21% to 18% over the past year, and illegal accesses are down from 141 million to 122 million,” La Liga said in the recently published Observatorio de la piratería report.
