beIN LaLiga has claimed strong viewership in Spain, but they are far from those that football gets on free-to-air (FTA) TV.

About to complete its first year on air, beIN La Liga has finally released audience figures, which show that the Mediapro-managed channel has become one of the most-watched pay-TV channels in Spain.

The highest ratings of the 2016/2017 football season were reached with last December’s El Clásico. The Barcelona v Real Madrid game delivered an average 2.2 million viewers and 17.31% (52.3% share if only analysing pay-TV) for beIN La Liga.

Also, the beIN Media channel*claims that seven live broadcastings have pulled in over one million viewers.

Even though the numbers are positive, especially taking into account that several channels share La Liga’s pay-TV rights, figures are far from those delivered by football when broadcast by FTA networks. For instance, Mediapro’s GOL averaged 5.33 million viewers*with the Copa del Rey semi-final between FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid. The Champions League semi-finals, reported Atresmedia’s Antena 3 nearly nine million viewers on average.
