Premiere chooses NDS VideoGuard
NDS, provider of technology solutions for digital pay-TV, has confirmed
that Premiere, the largest pay-TV operator in Germany and Austria, will
deploy VideoGuard, the content protection solution from NDS, to secure its
pay-TV satellite platforms in Germany and Austria.
During the coming months Premiere and NDS will be working closely to
smoothly migrate the operator’s satellite platforms and set-top box
population to VideoGuard. In order to facilitate this migration process,
Premiere plans to use Simulcrypt technology in collaboration with its
incumbent CA provider, Kudelski’s Nagravision.![]()
German pay-TV operator Premiere’s decision earlier this week to introduce NDS’s VideoGuard encryption system was widely expected. But less well-trailed was its continuation with Nagravision. The thinking is now becoming clear.
VideoGuard will be introduced from the second quarter of this year. At the same time, a new and improved version of the currently-utilised system Nagravision designed to combat recent security gaps will be used in parallel until at least 2012.
With this double strategy Premiere hopes to eliminate the ongoing piracy problems which are having a negative influence on the broadcaster’s business development. A report by German association for technical inspection TÜV Rheinland concluded at the end of February that hackers had succeeded in receiving Premiere illegally through foreign-manufactured modified digital receivers, which have been sold in large quantities throughout Germany.
Premiere will equip all new receivers with VideoGuard and plans to switch its satellite customers and households which receive Premiere through smaller network level 4 cable operators to the new encryption technology by 2012. The contract with NDS runs for 10 years, while the agreement with Nagravision ends in 2012 with an option for an extension until 2015.
Despite the changes, all Premiere subscribers can continue to use their current set-top-boxes. In receivers which can be converted to VideoGuard, Premiere will install the new technology by software update. Subscribers will then receive a message on the receiver providing them with a telephone number they can call to directly order a new smartcard. Programming will continue uninterrupted until the new smartcard arrives. Customers with set-top-boxes which are not converted will automatically receive in the post from May a smartcard suitable for the new Nagravision version.
Premiere already utilises other encryption systems next to Nagravision. As part of a collaboration with set-top-box manufacturer TechniSat, the package Premiere Thema is also encrypted in Conax, while for satellite households in Austria, Premiere Austria and Premiere Thema are encrypted in Cryptoworks so that the signals can be decrypted using Austrian public broadcaster ORF’s Cryptoworks smartcards.
Within the industry, Premiere’s migration to VideoGuard had been expected, especially since Rupert Murdoch’s international media concern News Corp became the broadcaster’s largest single shareholder at the beginning of January. VideoGuard was developed by NDS, a subsidiary of News Corp. After Kabel BW, Arcor and Tele Columbus, Premiere is the fourth German company to utilise VideoGuard. Until now, it was uncertain as to whether Premiere could use the security gaps experienced with Nagravision to prematurely end its agreement with the Swiss manufacturer Kudelski. Chief executive Officer André Kudelski was adamant that the contract remained legally binding: “We are convinced that the existing agreement continues to be valid,” he said at the end of February.
Industry observers consider Premiere’s actions to be a sign that it doesn’t have particular faith in the security of Nagravision’s new solution, but that it wants to avoid becoming embroiled in a costly legal battle over a premature dissolution of the Nagravision contract. This was confirmed by an insider at Premiere who said: “We didn’t want to enter into a legal debate with Kudelski.”
The announcement that satellite households and customers of smaller cable operators would be switched to VideoGuard by 2012 – the year in which the Kudelski contract expires – indicates that Premiere will not continue to utilise Nagravision in the long term. “We consider this double strategy during the changeover phase to be sensible, because it ensures that all subscribers can continue to use their existing set-top-boxes,” said Premiere spokesman Michael Jachan. “We are convinced that technically, practically all receivers can be converted to VideoGuard, but through natural fluctuations which will be boosted through the trend towards modern devices with hard disks, many subscribers will in any case replace their old receivers with new models over the coming years, which will utilise VideoGuard from the outset.”
Whether only VideoGuard will be utilised from 2012 or the three-year extension option with Nagravision will be taken, depends on the development of the market, explained Jachan: “We’ll have to first see what happens.” The broadcaster says its goal is to use only one encryption system in the long term – if alone because it simplifies the introduction of technically complex applications, for example multimedia services and interactive offers.
Premiere already uses the NDS middleware MediaHighway for its interactive hybrid receivers with internet access, which is ideally suited for use in conjunction with VideoGuard. “The development of new value-added services is simpler if the technology comes from one source,” said Jachan. As an example he cited the interactive ordering of films from the video-on-demand service Premiere Direkt by pressing a button on the remote control. “Here our plans are already well advanced.”
