Research by Dataxis has revealed that HD subscribers continue to increase significantly in Latin America’s pay-TV market, though growth is unequal among countries.

The penetration rate of HD among all pay-TV subscribers reached 37.5% in 2017, and the estimate for Q1 2017 is of 39.2%. The research firm*forecasts that it will reach 68.4% in 2022.

Brazil, Chile and Colombia will lead the region, exceeding 90% penetration five years from now. HD pay-TV will also grow above the average in Argentina, nearing 72.5% penetration.

However, countries like Mexico, Venezuela, Guatemala or Nicaragua won’t see real HD growth over the next few years, and penetration rates will remain below the average.

Dataxis believes that HD expansion is being driven by two main factors: the overall progression of digital television subscribers (85% of the total subscribers in 2016 and projected 94% in 2022) and the growth of the installed base of HDTV sets.

It estimated that 54.4% of Latin American homes with television had a HD screen in 2016, and forecasts this will rise to 75.9% by 2022.
